Great Cafes and Bars

Cafe Tortoni Founded in 1858 and located in downtown Buenos Aires. Many distinguished visitors have visited this historical cafe over the years. Carlos Gardel a regular visitor and used to sit on the right side of the table by the window entering Rivadavia, here he could meet with friends without being approached by fans. Beautiful cafe with historical atmosphere. Great coffee, cakes and lunch. Address: Avenida de Mayo 825, 1084 Buenos Aires, Argentina, Phone: (0)11 4342 4328

Gran Bar Danzon The food is good at Gran Bar Danzon. I used to go there in evening and stay after midnight when the young Buenos Aires crowd was there listening to the music and looking hip their mostly black fashionable outfits. I also enjoyed a great cigar in the glass smoking room at the bar. Great place for wine tasting as well. Reasonable prices. Address: Libertad 1161, City of Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, Argentina, Phone: (0)11 4811 1108.

Casa Cruz  Chef Juan Santa Cruz debuted  as restaurateur with this place that bears his name. This Instant hot spot started in late 2004. It is not always the food that draws in the crowds. A sexy dining experience comes with it. Address: Uriarte 1658, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Phone: (0)11 4833 1112.

Cluny is just a great place. Named after the Cluny museum in Paris. Style. elegance and great dining. Address: El Salvador 4618, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Phone: (0)11 4831 7176.

The Oak Bar & Terrace of Palacio Duhau  In the heart of the french heritage district of Recoleta, with the 1930's charm and Belle Epoque elegance of Palace Duhau, now a Park Hyatt Hotel. The terrace overlooking the garden is a sanctuary where you can enjoy a coffee, a drink or an al fresco dining on the terrace.

The Duhaus - prominent landowners - commissioned architect León Dourge for the design of a new residence adjacent to the old Hume house. Inspired in the Château du Marais (in Le Val-Saint-Germain, near Paris), the resulting Neoclassical palace and its guesthouse were completed in 1932.

Milion With it's style conscious clientele, this is one of the most stunningly set venues in Buenos Aires, inside a turn-of-the-last-century mansion in an enormous beaux-arts façade easily missed while walking the congested streets near the Galleria de Arte. A distinguished high ceiling cocktail lounge offers a sultry atmosphere of a dark, candle-lit corners and ornate settees among the buildings numerous glass doors and partitions. The main bar features abstract artwork. An upper lounge area is open for special events and the occasional 'underground' – or perhaps above ground party attended by BA's fashion elite. The ground floor  is home to the in-house restaurant with speciality in Latin-fusion cuisine with a trendy twist, but head upstairs to the bar, where a glamorous set of locals is invariably ordering drinks and getting to know each other. There's also an outdoor patio, and drinking and socialising flows down the marble staircase leading into the garden.
